The looks on the faces of Jen and Forest reflect their joint confusion and concern over the words Jen is reading from a book from her childhood, of ancient classic children’s tales. They seemed too brutal, too stark reality, too “what’s the point of the story? what’s the moral lesson here…is it a worthy one?” Children’s books now are beautifully illustrated, softer on the psyche, just more current? Imagine the Hans Christian Anderson stories of my youth, read to today’s youngsters. No, it won’t go over…Always fascinating to see the changes from “your time” to “this time”…or at least for those of us old enough to be noticing, usually over 60…with far more time for such serious pondering.
