Frank, Rex, Katherine and I enjoyed our morning coffee along the riverside. What a kick for us to just walk there in minutes, and meet up with these two.

Later Ria escorted us on a walk to Tavira, over an hour away walking along goat trails, past salt ponds, and here, past Carob trees. Ria, the garden club aficionado, gives Frank the story of carob beans being all equal sizes, and hence the standard for a karat of gold, with the word karat derived from the word carob. And so the day went. You get two Dutch people and you learn everything!

Ria and I enjoying Tavira. Later all of us went to a lecture at the library and a dinner in town. Frank and I will miss these energized friends when they soon depart.

Well, after two different train connections, we’re finally and happily ensconced in our “home” for the next few weeks, in the Golden Clube in Cabanas near Tavira, on the Algarve in Portugal. Only down side is the internet connection. To get a photo or two to go with this missive requires sleuthing tomorrow. Meanwhile, lovely friends Ria and Rex from N.S.! who told us of this great spot, also spotted us to a fine meal in their apt. rental, showed us about, gave us flowers, books, tea and cookies as well! Friends, no matter where you are in the world, are what makes a place feel like home

Next day..yeah, a photo from our room in Lisbon. Now that we have internet, I’m just adding them in to the message that didn’t publish before.

Enjoying the break between trains…

Sunday, March 9th, 2014

We travelled by two trains to Cabanas on the Algarve where we have a lovely little apt. for some weeks to come. Unfortunately the internet connection won’t let me upload photos into this Photo of the Day Blog….so we are off tomorrow to do something about that. We were greeted here by Ria, flowers, tea, cookies, huge strawberries awaited us. Then a tour of the area and later a wonderful meal with Ria and Rex and Catherine. Wonderful to have friends. It makes life so much sweeter.

The sun was peaking in the cloud cover over London as we descended this a.m…slightly worse for wear as an entire high school class boarded in Montreal and sat around us. Note to self..don’t travel at the beginning of March Break!

After a 6 hr! lay over at Heathrow airport, we flew on to Lisbon. By 9 p.m. local time, we were eating fashionably late, basically outside, in 18 C weather.

…and we’re off on flight 61 to take a round about trek to our final stop (read inexpensive trip)…and I’m getting excited. Frank “wants to be there” (read, already)..

Image 2We said good bye for awhile to Noah today…he was sitting up, crawling (babies love to make liars out of you…really he did those things)and we know he’ll be so much more “advanced” upon our return. Much as we want to go, it’s hard to leave.

Image 4This makes it a little easier. Tomorrow night or at least Saturday, we’ll be in London, Eng. awaiting our flight to Portugal.  Even when things are the same…rush hour…it will look different. Getting excited.

IMG_6598We delivered Daisy to her pet sitter, Jen, in prep for our departure. Of course, then we could spend time with the gang. Asa wasn’t well, and felt a “cage” was what he needed, when not in my arms (I must admit a sick child “nestled” against you feels wonderful. Though you feel bad for the child, you love their need of you? you feel needed? the feel of them? their more infant time remembered?) Asa arranged the chairs with Forest’s help, and had his “cage” which could also be called his “nest”.

IMG_6587I just can’t imagine making something so tiny, but Kristina is a master at it.

IMG_6590What a little treasure. It reminded me of a doll house Frank’s mum made for her grandchildren, complete with tiny quilts and needlepointed carpets. Wonderful how one thing leads to a memory you had forgotten that is sweet to revisit. It’s also wonderful how we each have our personal niche, whether it be our quilting style or the way we enjoy music..”whatever” in the best sense of that word. The tiny quilt will be in a larger “art” quilt.

IMG_6577As someone who paints, occasionally, I seem to notice photos that would not read well as paintings, or part of them would have to be banished from the work. Here, the exquisite small blue cloud, just hovering there, would look silly in a painting, like a fault. The photo tells you it’s real, the painting would be suspect. I think this works with imitations of other kinds too. The original works, the copy seems flawed somehow. At least I think I know where I’m going with this.

IMG_6584And close ups create their own distortion of the truth. The big picture gives you the big picture.

IMG_6572Another photo of a thousand words. I’m doing Sudoka while on hold on a phone call. Daisy is sleeping on her night time side of the bed. The two weekend papers are read and on the floor. Frank and I have just started to watch the first of the series “Orphan Black” on his computer. My coffee (brought to me by Frank) cup ( from Karin) is on the bedside table. My painting, a take -off on Kandinsky, is getting its usual head butt. All this in the early a.m, before any guilt can set in.
