Forest was busy from dawn till dusk working on a tree house. He can use all the tools as they are meant to be used..even made a rope ladder that supported his weight!

image

Astrid was busy cuddling the family kitty, Cloud..the one kitten they kept after Jen bottle fed five kittens found in a plastic bag within a box..All the rest have new homes..lovely. Not sure if Cloud thinks it’s great to be with Astrid, but she does seek her out.

image

Asa was busy helping Forest, but also spent time on the lovely gardening soil mound (compost generated)..there is Astrid, the stray black cat and the three piggies.

image

Frank and Will worked all day putting trim around each window and door, and creating a ” headband”.. Frank’s signature detail.

image

Jen is admiring the results..newly painted white walls, all the new pine trim..more to do but so much done.

image

Jen and I worked hard, as we have daily, on getting the overgrown weeds out of the garden..revealing purpose planted specimens. No before photo, but you must believe me when I say the results are great. I think Frank and I can advertise as willing workers for room and board. See where we land next.

Head down, ignoring everyone after being shamed for my ignorance. Well, it wasn’t that bad…but I learned, after doing my blog post, that even though the sun is in the north here at high noon, the rest of the compass doesn’t rotate. The sun in fact rises in the east and sets in the west, and I was looking west this morning, seeing the reflection of the rising sun. Of course, everyone knows that…now, for some of us.

This morning’s sunrise showing on the hillside..to the west! Still difficult for me to think that north and east provide the most sunlight in the house…so much so that I was shocked to see this..well, it ‘s the end of week one. Now I’m oriented.

imageThe piggies follow Jen everywhere as she had bottle fed them since they were five days old. This scene happened after we all walked up to check on the other animals. So cute.

image.jpg

Asa found the letter “Y” yesterday, and today I broke off the bottom of another stick, so he had the letter “V”.. For which Asa immediately said “violin” and we said ” visit” and “vacation”. Here he is sitting on my lap, showing off his letter and his new chicken feathers.

Astrid collects an egg..then adds a rock.which she throws, and retrieves and throws again many times..

image.jpg

..and walks back to the house still holding it…

Until…

Busy days. After taking off the old wallpaper and plastering the huge living, dining and kitchen space, the time came for the primer coat.

image.jpg

The kids, Jen and I, with the occasional invasion of piggies, hung out in the “shed”…literally. The room was superficially converted into space for us  and will eventually become two bedrooms attached to the main house. We were grateful to escape the dust that Will and Frank were creating.

image.jpg

Every part of the job took effort. The new lights looked worth it…

image.jpg

Meanwhile, outside, the boys are helping me with weeding..a massive job when you live in a controlled jungle.

image

We managed some art time too..the boys loved my wacky bird drawings, created for coulour by number . They have learned so much since we last saw them. The home schooling is showing wonderful results. It was hard to sit on the deck today, though  as the farmer who had his cows above us, removed some for sale, and a mama cow mooed pitifully all day. Sentient beings.

Forest entertains Astrid while the guys blast through the huge job of stripping the walls..

image.jpg

Astrid makes her break to play with the piglets..

image.jpg

..and the guys finish up this stage of the work up towards a new paint job, including the cabinets. We still have a few weeks…

image.jpg

Tuis sing in the tree while I hang the laundry. good Scrabble word.

image.jpg

The neighbours cows on the hill behind the property, moo along to the tuis. Between children and animals and birds, it’s all quite vocal. Rested enough now to embrace it all.

Jen feeding the chickens..

…getting acquainted.

More animals to feed..

image

..but first to wake them up..three little piggies..

image

..meanwhile, the guys, young and old, work on stripping the last layers of old wallpaper.  Great project, hoping to see big results before we leave.

Check out Jen’s video of her three piglets which she bottle fed since they were 5 days old, and the hysterical Astrid, and you’ll get a feel of what our time will be like in the countryside with Jen, family, and animals.

also…what a day to arrive..our 46th anniversary …who’d have thought this is where we’d be!

Hanging out at English Bay on a stop over on our trip to N.Z..it was 25 C which was quite a shock to the system..and all the amazing plants in bloom and flowering trees..awesome .

image

Then, because we think we’re still energizer bunnies, we rented a car and drove to Washington ..

image

..to meet friends who live there, who met us and shared a meal en plain air, with this great view. Friends rock.

Celebrating Frank’s birthday. The “test” family proved that the house “flows” well…enjoyed having them here as the guinea pigs.  They’re so cute.

IMG_1221

Two men in the kitchen…it works for me.

IMG_1231

Two men screwing in a light bulb…well, they also hung a quilt. not an easy spot to work in. It did take two.

IMG_1228

Meanwhile Drea and Noah amused themselves outside.

IMG_1227

Jockel worked hard outside too. We all did. It will take a lot of effort to “tame” this property, but the process is fun.

IMG_1234

Resting up..the first day to sit outside, always anticipated as we get through winter.

IMG_1193

By the end of the weekend, all the cooking, yard work, game playing…this room was very inviting. Glad we passed the “test” too, which is that the cute family enjoyed spending time with us here, despite the no surfing, no big beach walks. All is good.
